Discontinued Pattern Replication
When a natural wallcovering is deleted from a brand's line, the specification does not go away with it. Grasscloths is a Chengdu-based design studio and trading party that reproduces discontinued grasscloth, sisal and paperweave patterns with partner mills — from a swatch, a photograph or the original drawing.
Yes — a discontinued grasscloth pattern can usually be reproduced. Send a physical swatch (best), a high-resolution photograph, or the original spec drawing. Three in-house designers reverse-engineer the weave, fibre and dye into production-ready CAD, then a partner mill runs a physical proof. Replication carries a development proofing fee, quoted by sample difficulty and credited in full once your first order reaches MOQ. Minimum order is 100 rolls, approximately 500 m².
Can you match a discontinued grasscloth pattern?
In most cases, yes. A physical swatch gives the closest match because it carries fibre gauge, weave density and dye depth that a photograph loses. A high-resolution photograph or the original spec drawing also works. Our three in-house designers reverse-engineer the weave into production-ready CAD, then a partner mill runs a physical proof, quoted before any work starts.
What do you need from me to start?
Best case: a physical piece posted to Chengdu — A4-sized is ideal, and smaller works too; a coin-sized scrap is enough to match colour. Second best: a photograph shot in daylight, flat-on, with a ruler or coin in frame for scale. Third: the original manufacturer spec sheet or drawing.
How close will the match be?
Weave structure and fibre type reproduce closely. Colour is where honest expectation matters: natural fibre takes dye differently between harvests and dye lots, so we match to an agreed tolerance against your reference rather than promising an identical hue. Every run ships from a single dye-lot, and we keep two strips of every pattern on file for reorders.
What cannot be replicated?
Patented print processes, proprietary metallic laminates and substrates that are themselves discontinued are the usual limits. We say so before quoting rather than after proofing. Where the exact construction is unreachable, we propose the nearest producible alternative and show it in the proof.
How long does it take, end to end?
Quote within 24 hours of receiving your reference, including the development proofing fee, which is quoted by sample difficulty, confirmed in writing before work starts, and credited in full when your first order reaches MOQ. After you approve the physical proof, production runs 4–6 weeks for standard materials (grasscloth, sisal, cork, paperweave) and 5–8 weeks for specialty materials (wood veneer, gold foil, mica), plus ocean freight. Nothing enters production until you have approved a physical proof in hand.
What is the minimum order?
100 rolls, approximately 500 m². A standard roll is 0.915 m × 5.5 m and covers about 5.0 m². Quotes are EXW Chengdu; FOB, CIF and DDP are available on request. Payment terms are agreed per order and confirmed on the pro-forma invoice. Replication runs across all six material families we supply: grasscloth, sisal, cork, wood veneer, mica and gold foil.

Yuxing Qin has worked in natural wallcovering since 2018 and founded the studio in 2023. The design and the specification are ours; the weaving is the partner mill's.
