A dining room, Manhattan
Single statement room. Reed natural over four walls with reveal trim — a quiet counterpoint to a saturated art collection.
The client's art collection is dense and colorful. The designer made the deliberate choice to let the walls recede — a natural reed colorway that functions as a neutral ground rather than a competing element. GC-204 in its undyed state is one of the most honest naturals in the range: the reed fiber shows its actual color, with no pigment adjustment for commercial appeal.
At 32 m², this is a small project by area but precise by intent. The reveal trim detail at each wall junction required custom timber profiles from the millwork firm. The grasscloth terminates into the reveal rather than butting to baseboards or molding, which gives the room an architectural feel that straight-hung wallcovering rarely achieves.
The art collection changes regularly, but the designer reports that every new arrangement works against the natural reed. This is the primary value of an undyed natural fiber as a backdrop: it is inherently responsive rather than assertive. The material does not compete with what is placed in front of it.
