MC-08's pale champagne mica reads differently under each lighting condition in the treatment rooms — under the warm dimmed ambient lighting during a session, the mineral flakes catch and scatter light in a way that animates the surface without drawing attention to it. The effect is noticed unconsciously rather than explicitly, which is the right register for a treatment room environment.

The design firm's material brief for this project stated one criterion above all others: nothing manufactured. Cork, mica, grasscloth, and stone were the approved categories. Mica was specified for the treatment room walls because it is genuinely mineral — each flake is a real crystal, not a synthetic shimmer particle — and that authenticity is perceptible to clients in a way that printed or laminated shimmer effects are not.

Carmel's coastal humidity requires attention to adhesive selection. We specified a heavy-duty clear adhesive with a moisture-resistant cure for this installation. Mica flakes shed slightly at cut edges during installation, which is normal — the installer brushed the walls with a soft cloth after hanging to remove any loose mineral particles. No visible loss of surface coverage resulted from this process.
