24k gold foil bar back
Hand-laid 24k gold leaf bar back, lit from above. One of two installations where we kept the leaf un-oxidized.
Real gold does not tarnish. This is the primary argument for specifying GF-02 over composition leaf in an installation that cannot be easily refinished — a bar back behind a polished brass rail, lit from above with recessed warmwhite LEDs. The decision to leave the leaf un-oxidized was made after reviewing both options under the actual bar lighting during a site visit. The raw gold read as richer and more luminous than any patina treatment.
At 18 m², this is a small installation in area but not in precision requirement. Gold leaf at this price point demands Level 5 wall preparation — any substrate texture telegraphs through the thin metal surface and is amplified by the light grazing across it. The installation team skim-coated and sanded three times before the lead installer approved the surface. The prep took longer than the hanging.
The bar owner reports that the wall reads differently at every hour of operation — from the afternoon pre-opening light, through the warm incandescent-adjacent evening, to the post-midnight low-light conditions. This temporal variability is the real value of metallic wallcovering in a hospitality context. The wall is never the same surface twice.
