Specification Guide
Hospitality Wallcovering Specification
The complete specification guide for natural wallcoverings in hotels, resorts and commercial hospitality — fire codes, durability standards, material selection and where grasscloth works (and where it doesn't).
Specifying natural wallcoverings for hospitality is a balancing act — you want the warmth and texture of real grasscloth, but the project demands fire compliance, durability and maintainability. The good news: with proper specification, natural wallcoverings perform beautifully in hospitality. We supply materials to hotels and resorts in 40+ countries, and we've seen what works and what doesn't.
Where Natural Wallcoverings Excel in Hospitality
| Location | Suitability | Recommended Material |
|---|---|---|
| Guest rooms | Excellent | Grasscloth, sisal, cork |
| Lobby / reception | Excellent | Grasscloth, wood veneer, mica |
| Restaurant / bar | Good (with topcoat) | Sisal, cork, gold foil |
| Suites / VIP areas | Excellent | Any natural material |
| Spa / wellness | Good (low humidity areas) | Cork, grasscloth |
| Corridors | Conditional (FR required) | FR-treated sisal, wood veneer |
| Pool / wet areas | Not recommended | Use Type II vinyl |
Fire Code Requirements
Fire compliance is non-negotiable in hospitality. Here's what you need:
| Standard | Requirement | Our Materials |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM E84 (US) | Class A (FSI ≤25) or Class B (FSI ≤75) | Class A achievable with FR treatment |
| EN 13501 (EU) | B-s1,d0 or C-s1,d0 | C-s1,d0 standard; B-s1,d0 with treatment |
| GB 8624 (China) | B1 (flame retardant) | B1 standard on all FR products |
| NFPA 286 | Room corner fire test | Available on request (project-specific) |
All our hospitality-grade materials come with fire test certificates from ISO 17025 accredited labs. We provide project-specific documentation for your fire protection engineer. See our fire rating guide for detailed standards.
Durability & Performance
Natural wallcoverings aren't vinyl — they require appropriate expectations and placement. In the right locations, they outperform vinyl on aesthetics while delivering acceptable durability:
- Lifespan — 10–15 years in hotel guest rooms (vs 7–10 for Type II vinyl before it looks dated)
- Abrasion resistance — moderate; suitable for guest rooms, not for luggage-cart corridors
- Stain resistance — limited; specify protective topcoat in F&B areas
- Moisture tolerance — low; avoid bathrooms and pool adjacencies
- UV resistance — moderate; natural fading adds character but specify UV-stable dyes for south-facing walls
Material Selection by Area
Guest Rooms (Primary Application)
Grasscloth and sisal are the most popular choices. Guest rooms have controlled humidity, moderate traffic and ideal lighting for showcasing natural textures. Specify:
- Non-woven backing (≥120 gsm) for dimensional stability
- FR treatment to ASTM E84 Class B minimum
- Standard width (91.5 cm) for efficient installation
Lobbies & Public Areas
Higher impact and visibility. Choose wood veneer, mica or heavy-weight sisal for their visual impact and superior durability. Feature walls with grasscloth work well when set back from high-traffic paths.

Installation Standards for Hospitality
Hotel installations demand higher precision than residential:
- Wall prep — skim coat all walls to Level 5 finish; natural wallcoverings telegraph imperfections
- Adhesive — clay-based adhesive for grasscloth; Roman Pro-880 or equivalent
- Acclimation — materials must acclimate 24–48 hours in the installation room
- Seam treatment — double-cut seams with roller; reverse-hang alternating panels
- QC inspection — independent inspection at 10% completion, 50% and 100%
Frequently Asked Questions
Can natural grasscloth be used in hotel corridors?
Yes, with FR treatment. Fire-retardant treated grasscloth can achieve ASTM E84 Class A (FSI ≤25), meeting most corridor requirements. However, high-traffic corridors may benefit from a protective topcoat. Guest rooms and lobbies are ideal primary applications.
What fire rating do hotels typically require?
Most US hotels require ASTM E84 Class A or B depending on location. Corridors and exit paths typically require Class A. Guest rooms may accept Class B. Always confirm with the local AHJ and your fire protection engineer.
How does grasscloth hold up in hospitality environments?
With proper specification, grasscloth performs well. In guest rooms, lobbies and restaurants, it typically lasts 10–15 years before replacement. The key is specifying FR treatment, appropriate backing weight, and professional installation with proper wall preparation.
